How fun is lunchblogging in the long run?

This blog has been sleeping for a few weeks now, both due to the M&A rumours - but also due to some serious analysis on the status of lunchblogging.
The images illustrate a combination of a classical Candlestick (Heikin-Ashi inspired version) technical analysis and a OLHC-analysis - obviously trending downwards.

Both these methods have their weaknesses, needless to say - but the trend is clearly lowering, although with some upswings now and then. The trend line (see below) is quite clear in it's simplicity.
Of course, one can argue, this is the quantitative analysis - with all it's flaws. I will get back to the qualitative version - and let you in on the results.

Elevene ved Høssin' ungdomsskole (HUNG) gikk mer eller mindre bananas etter at de fikk biff stroganoff med ris til lunsj i HUNG-kafeteriaen sist torsdag. Måltidet skal ha inntruffet seg til lunsjtider. Rektor ved skolen Einar Kness-Mjølnersen uttaler at han er "... lettet over at skade omfanget begrenser seg til kun rekvisita. Although: Must say that the guys baking skills impress me, since they are not bakers but freelance soldiers.

It’s beyond any doubt that bacon is one of the absolutely finest things in the world. Gold? Well, it can be used to buy bacon, so initially I’m a fan. Likewise with diamonds and such. But bacon far surpasses for example Jesus’ favorite sensory stimulant, myrrh.

But I digress. Myrrh has no place in lunch. Bacon, however, does. As well as in any other meal. I’ve read somewhere that bacon is the third condiment, in addition to salt and pepper. And who am I to question those sources? And who are you to refrain from having a side of bacon with anything or everything? If Heston Blumenthal can keep making his bacon and egg ice cream, you could start keeping bacon around for everything else.

Anyway. There’s bacon and then there’s Bacon. The lower case one is the watered out stuff you buy in any given Norwegian suckass grocery store, where everything is cheap as shit and that’s probably not the only similarity to fecal matter. The other kind, the real bacon, Bacon, is a thing for gods. It’s the stuff that will actually provide a full-fledged heart condition at a young age if consumed properly (read: in abundance).

How much is store-bought bacon? I’m guessing here, no need to make any informed statement, but it should run you about 200-250 bucks (NOK) a kilo. Slightly less expensive than Trendy’s preferred coke-diet, but since TheMats is currently not employed doing trend research or something where people throw goodiebags and money in your direction, I’m approaching this from the cheap perspective. Meaning I made my own Bacon, which cost me about 50 pop a kilo.

Now, it takes about four weeks, but that’s mostly waiting, and it’s not like you’ve not waited longer for other stuff that’s awesome. Remember when you were 14 (or 16 or 18 or whenever)? You had waited a long ass time to have sex, and though it probably bothered you, you still endured it. But I digress. Again. The point is, making your own Bacon is far easier than making you own salt, or pepper, and it’s cheap, and it’s the best thing in the world, except for maybe gold, which will buy you both bacon and sex.

I’ve just loaded a new batch of hog jowls to the attic, where they will cure for three weeks and become delicious guanciale, which is the even more heart stopping cousin of Bacon. And when it’s done, I’ll invite Lunch Dagenson for my favorite bacon-related dish except from the obvious favorite ”Bacon”: Carbonara, made according to the receipe of the guy that openly professes his love for lardo, or proscioutto blanco, Mario Batali. Fat as fuck and gluttonous and enjoying life.

Make it yourself someday. Make it for lunch or dinner or whatever, that’s not my mission here to discuss.

When the good people at McCann invited me for lunch at their Oslo HQ to discuss some lunch-related projects, of course i said yes. It's like the Sartorialpiste being invited to Wengen. When they say lunch - you say how much.

Lunch at McCann was delicious. Good selection, and it is free. We even had wafles for dessert. The hardest part is getting used to ISS again.

Well, time to ignore the fact that a colleague spotted how ISS actually gather their salads for the salad-bar (images to come in a blogpost in a not so far future), and get back at it.

Guest blogger Hawk: On the ISS debacle

Hmmm… well, I felt inspired to do this post after reading Lunsj Dagensons thoughts on the disastrous findings in ISS’ cafeterias.

There are some points I would like to make on this, and after having visited the ISS website I must say that I find the gap between the promises being made on this website, and my experiences with ISS Catering.

I quote from the website:

- Individual solutions tailored to user needs and wants
- Varied, versatile and delicious cuisine based on fresh ingredients
- Great food experiences in welcoming surroundings
- Enthusiastic and skilled staff
- Short decision-making processes
- Ongoing quality assurance and satisfaction measurement

Well, what can I say? I can partly agree with what they say about short decision-making processes (probably way too short most the times), but I have yet to experience the rest of what’s pointed out here.

I have also noticed the pictures being used on the website, and I feel the gap between promise and delivery also being present here. There is something disturbingly familiar with the woman on the left and the poster so beautifully framing her head, but the rest of the picture I find totally unrecognizable. See illustrations below.

Government Inspectors find that only 2-3 of 300 ISS canteens are OK...

Finally, some support from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. The Authority spanked some ISS ASS on national TV yesterday - after their discovery of the total neglect of hygiene and basic understanding of food safety displayed by ISS in one of their canteens.

After checking some 300 canteens in Oslo - they found only two or three that acutally followed the rules. Two canteens were actually shut down there and then - and ISS now has to pay a fine for one of them. That's how bad it is.

Jan Petter Svinø of the Food Safety Authority - you are my hero. Keep diggin!

Oddly, ISS Faculty Services does not want to comment on this matter...

Lunch-related signs and hip new media possibilities

Been lunching hard lately. Christmas coming up. Must practice.

Anywho: The relatively (lunchwise) challenged dynamic duo "Tynn & Trendy" moved their venture to Twitter due to the thin format.

Dagens Lunsj is looking into the same possibility - but due to the relatively low number of lunchrelated tweets we are holding back on this for now. Seems like the regular, unhip, web is the place to be right now. Stuff is happening, people meet - and so on. Blabla.

Anyway, lately we've been running into some pretty weird lunch-related signs lately. Two examples:

Just had lunch with a great friend of mine, Lunsj Dagenson himself. Nice guy, although he seems to lose focus every time he is in the presence of delicious food. Especially mid-day.

Anyways, we sat down for an hour, chatting about the bitches and the weather and the skin texture of obese people (you know, when it is pale and see through and you can see the fat and the arteries dancing underneath the skin). Lunsj-D had a big dish of something (i couldn’t bare myself to look at it), while I had my normal lunch routine: Snö&Coke. The coke keeps me going, the Snö keeps me fresh.

Thanks for the lunch, Lunsj.

Now this li'l old lady choose to rather eat her cutlery than her lunch. I bet her lunch came from ISS. Sometimes it can be hard telling what's what on your plate, and i choose to believe that the 78 swallowed pieces of cutlery is a result of 78 accidental misshaps. Poor lady.

Most interesting part of this piece of news is that it is over 30 years old. Also it seems to be based on a nurses assumption of "some kind of mental disorder".

None of us in the lunchblogging sphere has ever heard of whalesurfing before. Obviously a sport practiced by elderly men by poking a tied whale with a stick. Looks like fun. I knew i should have learned norwegian - but the images inspire me enough!

Can we trust ISS?

It has come to my attention that ISS does not solely focus on providing weak lunches, they also try to advance in space research.

From an early age, one learns that focusing on your core areas is important. This might be the worst mixup in the history of lunch.

Also, if the personell in our canteen enjoys a paralell career as astronauts, i am seriously worried about how great this "star wars" stuff really is. ISS, you have me doubting - again.

It seems like they might be investing our lunch money in space stuff. I say: Give me back my 3038 billion NOK.

Two of ISS's favourite variations. "Rice with something we just warm up". The rice is like porridge - the warmed-up item is pretty cold. Bueaeah.

At least there is no worry to get dangerously obese by consuming the ISS food. It is not possible to eat that much of it - even though the nutrition part is aweful.

The guests are not the problem here, the restaurant is... I wish we at least had beer.

Beware: Easter has been moved…by ISS

The ISS website is like a bible to DagensLunsj and the DagensLunsj’ advertisers. This is where we go for inspiration and entertainment, and of course for all major news updates. It is basically our primary trusted news source. Our latest visit to ISS.no gave us a major heads up on an upcoming holiday, and we think it is important to share this with our readers.

When describing the canteen menu for March, ISS serves us with this controversial statement: March is the Easter month, and we should eat eggs. Lots and lots of eggs.

March?? Easter?? Our calendar clearly states that this years’ Palm Sunday is on the 5th of April. What are we supposed to think? Well – as usual, we believe in our bible. We believe in ISS.

So, by the power vested in ISS canteens - Easter has now officially been moved.

Singer and guitarist Øystein Greni from Norwegian rockband BigBang says in a web-meeting with the readers of VG, on the upcoming trend of lunchblogging, that he "...dont think that food is something to write about", and that "...this is something people should talk about".

It is clear that Mr. Greni at least have taken a stand on this issue - and we congratulate him with that. The worst thing to do is not to care at all...

In the end he says that "it is good to warn people of bad places", and thats sort of what this blog does, so...

We´re looking forward to your studio album, Øystein! But we strongly believe emotions and feelings is nothing to sing about - you are supposed to blog it.

In the meantime we are reading up on the subject of handling critizism while waiting for summer and looking forward to learn what other Norwegian celebrities think of lunchblogging...

With a non-functioning camera today - here's a flashback from a few months ago. A bun with raisins for NOK 7. Dry and extremely expensive.

Here's what ISS promises us for March:
"Easter is the time to gorge in eggs. Boiled eggs, fried eggs, poached eggs, scrambled eggs, omelettes, gratins, pancakes and wafles. Eggs in salads, soups and cakes."

Maybe this is the time to go to sweden to get some cheap groceries, ISS? SEK vs NOK is weak and the road to Sweden is short... If you use a good car...

Painful Pedigree Pal Pasta

Kaboom. Here's a hit to your stomach.
Overboiled pasta with a tomato sauce that really could have been eaten if it wasn't for the "meaty" content. This stuff both looks and smells like the dogfood we all know - the one from the can that you really don't like to handle, you know. Or catfoood - whatever.

As one of my colleagues said. "It's like a funeral in my mouth - and a revolution in my stomach". Second that.

I will actually be surprised if nobody get seriously ill from this. Perhaps not like salmonella, but a vomit or two is expected during the day. Who knows what these lumps of "meat" really is? The threat from food is all over the news - and all over this blog. Stay tuned

Ups- and downs syndrome

Weird. It seems like ISS actually has taken some action. Somedays we actually get salad to the warm food - and sometimes the warm food is not THAT disgusting.

But...

Suddenly they're back to "normal" level. A soggy small piece of omelette for NOK 16 is not really a full healthy meal -is it?

Oddly enough - after a few weeks of lunch-campaigning food has actually gotten better! It was a huge surprise to suddenly find burritos, salad, salsa, cheese for NOK 30 last friday.

The main difference is that lunch now actually consist of more than ONE ingredient. Ok, fish cakes with green salad probably still is not to be considered a full meal - but with some additional bread it actually helps.

It is a welcomed stunt by ISS to actually start doing something. Not nearly as bad as the norwegian female skiers last embarresing behaviour - and it made me think that a potential lawsuit perhaps should wait, despite the recent inspiring lawsuit here in Norway.

The guys at NRK (National TV) complains about expensive orange juice. I am glad that more and more people are focusing on the food-offering at work!

Disrespecting your customers, part XXIIV

Do i really need to comment on this? Price was 16 NOK and this is ISS' complete offering for us interested in warm lunch.

This is all part of the concept "Food and People" from ISS. Here's the translation of what this program offers. Straight off the ISS website:

"Offer healthy and nutritious food"

"Offer great variation"

"Give our customers the possibility to choose from different things"

"Satisfied customers"

"Satisfied employees"

Here's the text that describes februarys theme for ISS. I wont even bother to translate this to english - thats how plain wrong this is:

"Februar: Iskaldt ute – i kantinen tenker vi mange varme tanker. Hva med glovarme supper med rykende nybakt brød. Brennede kjærlighet – en spicy gratinert ovnsrett. Hete retter fra østen med hvitløk og chili for de modige. Varm eplekake eller sjokoladefondant. Dampende solbærtoddy eller varm sjokolade med krem. Mmm…kom inn og varm deg."

They should be sentenced to attend the same "Respect" class as the Brittish prince. At least, paying for this "food" should be mandatory, just like this guy suggests for dagbladet.no. Im glad to notice that i am not the only one in cyberspace that is not satisfied with the lunch canteen offering...

Reprise... from two weeks ago

An ISS special: Sauerkraut, meatlumps and lingonberry jam. Exaclty the same as two weeks ago - but this time with dried potato boats. And a new price. NOK 30. Two weeks ago the same meal cost 32, and then you did not get any potatoes.

World economy also plays a part in the price politics of ISS apparently. Quality has been on the "Wall Street 1929"-level since ISS became in charge of the canteen - so it can hardly become worse.

As Obama would say it: "we need swift and aggressive action". Otherwise i would have to get me one of these USB powered lunchboxes and bring my own food. Since the water usually taste s**t i would also have to buy some kind of a water purifyer...
Are we too nice to ISS, just as the norwegian national football team is to their opponents?

Someone should look into this matter.

Salmon Scandal

This really did not have to be so aweful. There is salmon, veggies and potatoes. The salmon is served with a tomato sauce. But...
When food is cold - it really does not taste that good. If it's cooked to absolute death, that does not help either. 28 NOK.

The upside is definetly the number of different ingredients here. Yesterday we had one (1). What will tomorrow bring?

Turkey Tragedy

Another great delivery from ISS. Turkey "panette" with cheese. 20 NOK. No rice, no salad, no nothing.

What can you say? Yes, i do prefer this before "Snåsa-poteten", but damn! This is not something i would reccomend anyone to serve. Not if you like your customers.

Do i have to give up and start having cold lunches from the salad-bar? The quality certainly varies there as well - but it is much harder to mess up "take salad out of package - put it in salad-bar" than "take "panette" out of package, warm it slightly - put it on a tray".

Autumnrolls?

Are these springrolls or autumnrolls?
Springrolls are crisp and full of great expectations. I guess autumnrolls are, well, kind of crisp in a way - but with a slushy and soggy base. And the filling actually looked like old rotten leafs. Just like the ground in the autumn - you never really know what that goo actually is.

We need support and comfort. Perhaps watching Lunsjtrav could be a good idea? The only thing that could help this lunch is either winning a jackpot or getting comforted by a crown princess. Maybe we should just take a taxi out of here - to better lunchspots?
Price, by the way: 32 NOK - soy sauce was free. Buying 32of these 1 NOK appartments would be a better idea.

Norways leading online newspaper, VG.no, reveals one of the best tricks in the book. To avoid bad lunches (and bad drinks in general) one can do as the local politician in Arendal municipality:

Break into the mayors office and help yourself to some of his wine or lunch. Let this be an inspiration to us all - the lunches (and drinks) sure are better on the other side of the fence!

At least it should be better on the mayors side of the fence. Good thinking, local politician! And another solid delivery from VG.no!

Foot-long hoagie from Baker Hansen, accompanied by a bear-berry smoothie with youghurt natural.

The hoagie was rougher than Chuck Norris to eat, and smoothie was chilling cold. Not as chilling as the price though; 115 NOK for the lot.

Bad lunch + the cleavage is back

28 NOK for this "calzone" that really is a pirogue of some kind. I wish Mr. Hellstrøm could come to our canteen to have a quick tasting of some of this "culinary dark-side of the moon" food of ours.

The pirougzone was dry in the edges - and had little or no fillin. Just as expected. Why do i keep doing this to myself? I will probably go loco like Christian Bale some day if this continues.

Maybe i'll have lunch "out of office" someday. Any ideas where to go?

Sceptics with the wrong focus

As "The Sceptic" James Randi attacks Snåsamannen and other "paranormal" figures in the world history, this blog believes he could do better by investigating "the awful truth" about your lunch.

Everyday we are fooled to believe that the BS they serve us in the canteen is actually worth paying for. Please James, come follow us instead! We're lunch sceptics - and we need your help.

Quit bugging Uri Geller and Snåsamannen, and move on to more important targets - such as Ari Behn or at least focus on the Kantinelunsj!

Look at the aweful picture above. This is supposed to be an omelette! Damn if they are right. Soon i will have to start living by the "Tynn & Trendy" regime to stay away from this no-good threat to mankind.

At least, perhaps we could call in Obama to have a look at the lunching state of the nation...

VG unveils the "scandal" discovered in Sweden, where someone working in a school canteen scraped pasta from the floor and put it back into the pot to serve it.

Now this is agressive!
For my international readers: A wiener with lompe or bread can be bought at any 7eleven or local kiosk/hole in the wall. It will set you back about NOK 15, and you can choose between a variety of toppings.

This is from a subsidised canteen, and they are charging NOK 20. The choice in topping is: raw onion, ketchup or mustard. There is no hot dog buns. Just lompe. Feels like ISS´ "Food and People" approach really does not deliver the goods here.

I must say; i am not very price sensitive when it comes to lunch. At last, i have to provide lunch relevant maerial for my readers. But, to be honest, i did not go for this lunch.

It was quite fun to see the (generally numb to lousy lunches) other customers in the canteen. Even they reacted - most of them very mildly, but some were actually discussing the price with the canteenlady. Feels great to see others reacting on this - the lowest tidal mark of gastronomy.

Amazing. NOK 32 for sauerkraut, lingonberry jam and meatlumps (not meatballs. Lumps). No potatoes, no nothing. After whining a bit about it i was told by the lady that work there "ok, you may have a piece of bread with that". Fantastic lunchstuff. Tasted as it looks.

After actually buying such a meal, i feel kind of like Kristian Kjelling when losing the handballgame towards the polish national team. "My eyes are full of tears", he said. His, because of losing - mine because of really sour saurkraut.

By the way, there has been discussions about this blog. Will it survive the fierce competition in the blogosphere? My answer is to quoute Noel Gallagher from Oasis from an interview with VG.no today: "Who knows what we´ll do in ten years"...

Fighting on an airplane, due to lack of lunch?

As promised, cleavage and lunch.

NOK 32 for veggie soup (rests from salad-bar + water), two slices of bread and a smal pack of cheese. Not ultra-bad, but i really dont like seeing yesterdays lunch incorporated in todays.

Hopefully the cleavage is more popular than the last one published on this blog. Less hairy and less manly. Feel free to comment.

Lunch, or lack of it, can influence all of us. One of todays' top stories in VG.no is about a norwegian that went berserk on a plane. This bloggers' theory is that he was pissed off due to the boring lunch alternatives he was offered by Apollo, the charter company. Dagbladet also cover the story, but since they lack sources they choose to refer to VG, who refer to TV2. Great stuff.

Trying something new here. To please my readers, lunch will now be portrayed with some kind of cleavage in the background. Some great research shows that cleavage sells blogs, and hopefully it will work with this blog as well.

And now, to the matter of lunch.

Today was probably a new all time low for ISS. The fish type was sei (coalfish). Probably a 500 kg specimen, 200 years old that they found dead on a shore close to a nuculear plant. At least it tasted like it had been aged on a beach somewhere for quite some time. Perhaps it was somewhat dried as well.

Veggies were frie-cut coins of carrot and the usual gooey broccoli. You could also find some pieces of old potatoe in the mix.

Norwegians: You might be (somewhat, depending on who we compare you with)good handball players, but you sure can't cook.

And now, let's lean back and see what cleavage can do for MY blog!

Lunch instead of pot?

Norwegian ski-jumper (yes it acutally is considered a sport) Lars Bystøl is considered a junkie in norway due to the content of THC in his blood. My belief is that his potsmoking could be replaced with a decent lunch.

Remember Lars: Lunch is (probably) the most important meal of the day. It can, and should not, be replaced by pot. I know you guys live under the "Tynn & Trendy" regime (light guys jump longer), but please do not use drugs instead of lunch. Lunch will also get you high. Lunch-high.

Maybe, in a few years, lunching will be considered illegal due to it's strengthening effect of your body?

Springroll

Here's two different versions of todays lunch. Seems like someone listened to yesterdays post about how to keep it simple (stupid). Rice + springroll = 20 NOK.

An alternative is the cold salad bar - quite a costly solution, since it's measured in weight. On the lower picture is a salad containing rice and some other stuff. The scale priced this to 35 NOK...

Anyway, the springroll was quite soggy - but i cant really complain about the rice. With some sweet chili sauce and soy - one can eat almost anything, no matter the original taste. ISS could probably learn quite a few things about springrolls from these guys. Please ISS, have a read!

Fries 101

NOK 18 for supersoggy fries (made of potato this time) and a burger. Brown stuff is probably onion, but i am not sure. I had one of my colleagues taste it - but she could not identify the flavour. As first-aid i used some chilli-sauce to spice things up. Did not help very much.

The interesting thing here is the approach to fries. Basic idea is for them is to be crispy - or at least to be able to maintain its own weight when being positioned horizontally and held in one end. The image above shows the result of "Dagens Lunsj's patented crispynesstest". Not approved.

There is probably a good formula to explain this - but i do not believe ISS have understood this, or even had "Fries 101" as a mandatory training session for their employees.

When you are a company serving food, and your equipment does not support the making of fries - you should not make them. Go for something easier. Like rice. Or you can order catering and serve that.

Or, when you don't even serve your drinking water cold - perhaps you should stay away from the restaurant business?

Meatballs and nachos...

Another one from the great Nachoweek 2008. Weird combo with meatballs, cous-cous, and of course, nachos. I believe this was about 30 NOK. Don't really remember the taste of this one - but nachos is always great!

I wonder what happened to ISS' supply of nachos. Did they run out? Was it too popular? Too expensive, or just way too advanced?

Anyway ISS, bring Nachoweek back in 2009! Nachos can supress the taste of a lot of bad lunches.

Nachoweek 2008 - revisited

Here's one from the classical period. The period when ISS got their hands on quite a load of nachos. We had nachos accompanying every meal for about a week. Then they ran out.

Here's one of the great dishes from Nachoweek 2008.
Overboiled pasta, tomato and "meat" sauce, luke warm water and nachos.

The beautiful thing with nachos is that it is hard for ISS to ruin them completely. As long as you keep them away from water - they could stay eatable (i say eatable, not fresh) for quite some days. The standardized taste, shape and colour of the nachos can elevate most meals.

French frie cut veggies and salmon roll...

30 NOK worth of "salmon roll filled with broccoli goo" served with ISS' famous "french-frie cut root vegetables" and double boiled potatoes. Also included in the price is boiled broccoli.

Texture: Texture of veggies is close to mash. Let's put it this way: If you were blind, you wouldn't notice when your fork goes into the carrots. Soft.

Another awful one. Swedish turnip, "omelette" containing last weeks' content from the salad-buffet, two slices of kneipbrød and some old smoked salmon. I sure know how to make a great composion. Good thing is that, if it's not toxic in itself, it's quite healthy. Note: IF not toxic...

Yep, lunch and fashion.

Lunch: Overboiled, then chilled wiener-derivate-kindof hotdog with powder-based mashed potatoes. Served with no-brand ketchup. Not the best - but far from the worst. Price 28 NOK.
